Training.
We have been delivering Outdoor Learning sessions since 2009 across southern Scotland, including the Scottish Borders, East Lothian, and Midlothian.
From the very beginning, our goal has been to help children and young people build confidence, resilience, and a deep, lasting connection to nature.
Connecting with the curriculum and providing alternative ways of raising attainment, aspiration and motivation in learners.

Our work is guided by Founding Director Pete Carthy, an experienced primary school teacher with over 24 years in education, five years of that as a Social and Complex Needs teacher. Pete brings a deep understanding of child development, Curriculum for Excellence, inclusive learning, and nature connection. This has shaped our approach to delivering engaging, safe, and nurturing Forest Schools programmes.

Forest Schools – SCQF L2-8 qualifications
As IW has evolved, so too has our commitment to accessible, experience-led education. Consequently, we are able to offer FOLA (Forest Outdoor Learning Award) SCQF qualifications, from Levels 2 to 8.
Bushcraft – SCQF L5 (Institute of Outdoor Learning).
In response to increasing interest in hands-on nature skills, we will be able to offer NcFE Level 2/SCQF L5 in Bushcraft from May 2026. The current Directors are undergoing a period of training in the Institute of Outdoor Learnings – Bushcraft Competency Certificate. This exciting development will allow us to support even more individuals who are passionate about nature-based learning, survival skills, and ecological understanding.
These qualifications fit well with providing alternative curriculums.
Outdoor Learning.
In addition, we design bespoke programmes tailored to specific learner needs, age groups, and budgets, ensuring outdoor learning remains inclusive and relevant. Whether you are a school or, community group we can help craft an experience that truly connects learners with nature.
